SEO, SEM and SEA - what is the difference?

What is SEO?

SEO - or search engine optimization - in short means optimizing a website or content on social media, for example, for keywords, to rank higher on Google or other search engines. Using keywords can help you to be seen on Google, and become the customer's obvious choice. When a customer searches for a phrase or word on Google to find a product or service, they will almost always choose one of the first three options that come up. These three are almost always the ones with the most search engine-optimized websites, with the right content and the right keywords for their industry. They are also the ones that will be the leaders for your industry, simply because they are the most visible.

Of course, there are more things involved in SEO than just knowing which keywords to use. You need to know which keywords are most popular in your industry, how much volume each keyword has, and how much competition you have to rank for that particular keyword. SEM - or search engine marketing - means marketing yourself using search engines. It can involve using SEO to gain visibility and organic growth, or paying for ads that make you visible on Google

SEM is actually a collective name for both SEO and SEA, i.e. search engine advertising. It means using keywords in your ads to combine an organic, and a paid growth. All these fields and terms are basically about the same thing - using keywords to increase your digital presence. So there is not a huge difference between the three concepts, except that there is a distinction between paid and unpaid methods of marketing.

SEO- Search Engine Optimization also takes time to achieve results and lasts long-term, unlike SEM- Search Engine Advertising which gives immediate results and lasts only as long as ads are paid for.

But it may be wise to stay up to date and try to learn some of it anyway so that over time you can start producing content and ads that benefit your business.
